Rebalancing: Keeping Positions In Range

A practical rebalancing loop for Meteora DLMM positions: when to recenter, when to wait, and the automation rules worth copying.

In this guide 4 sections

The only decision that matters: recenter or wait

When price leaves your range, liquidity stops earning and your position converts to a single-sided bag. You have two options: zap out and re-open centered on the current active bin, or do nothing and wait for price to come back.

Recentering on every wiggle is the classic fee-drain loop. Each rebalance costs gas (roughly 0.01 to 0.03 SOL per cycle), pays swap spread on the conversion, and can lock in a loss the old position would have recovered from.

The bot rules humans should steal

Automated stable-pair LP books run three rules that translate directly to manual trading:

  • Set ranges wide enough to contain the trailing 30-day 95th-percentile move, targeting fewer than 2 rebalances per position per week.
  • Cooldown: never rebalance the same position more than once per 6 hours without a deliberate reason. This kills the choppy-market recenter loop.
  • Stop-loss variant: if PnL drops past a hard threshold on a calm pair (say -3%), zap out and do not re-enter. That large a move on a stable pair means something is wrong.

The manual loop, step by step

Check in-range status on a schedule, not by mood. When a position goes out of range, first ask why: did the token trend (recenter makes sense), or is it chopping around your edge (waiting is usually right)?

If you recenter: zap out to the base token, keep a gas reserve (0.05 SOL minimum in the wallet), then open a fresh position centered on the current active bin with the same range width logic as before. If fees have piled up past a threshold (roughly $8-15 to clear the gas cost of a claim-plus-swap cycle), claim them during the same operation rather than paying gas twice.

When not to rebalance at all

On degen baskets, the whole point is not touching positions: the portfolio-level print covers individual positions falling out of range. Rebalancing every memecoin position is a full-time job that also multiplies your exposure to bad recenters.

Match the rebalance discipline to the strategy: slow cook and stable pairs get the structured loop; heart attack positions are designed to be closed, not rebalanced.
